Pieces of My Heart

 

Pieces of My Heart is a collection of poetry, organized into sections labeled, “Fantasy”, “Despair”,”Loneliness”, “Trauma”, “Love”, and “Death”.

The book is a mix of poetry styles, often a freestyle of poetry, without meter or rhyme, but often having a structure. Some examples are a poem with 3 words in the first line, 4 in the second(mostly) and 1 in the final line. The poems are generally short, mostly less than a page in length, or less than a dozen lines, of which the lines are often short as well.

The times the poetry does rhythm, I find it a bit of treat, the poem, Alone, I Wander starts,

And the time will pass

And my wounds will heal

But your presence will stay

And the nightmares are real

I think the poem has a nice flow here. I have trouble exactly putting it into words. The second half of the poem loses that rhyme scheme though and reads,

My soul all alone

Only left to wander

These empty corridors

These silent halls.

I think this poem is generally emblematic of the poetry in the book. The themes are dark, the poem is short, there is a cloud or feeling of despair and a general dark tone. The voice of the poem is often all alone. 

The themes of the poems are often rather dark, like emotional abuse, losing loved ones to death and age, and submitting to oblivion. As a means of creating the feelings, I find the work quite effective. I’m not the most versed in reading poetry, but what I have learned is that it is the most important part of a work of poetry. The feeling it evokes, and then perhaps next the images it conjures. 

I particularly liked Haunting the Lost, as it succinctly crafts a tale of a ghost of a girl haunting the place of her death (or well presumably). The poems often tell a very short story, some of which I found more compelling than others.

The book is formatted with a poem on each page, with a blank page between poems. I looked at a digital copy, but I think the idea is that each poem will be on the right side of the book.

I recommend this book for people to enjoy the themes discussed and who like short poems.
