Desperate Remedies
Desperate remedies is a three-chapter short story. The story is short enough, I really can't say too much without spoiling it. So I will spoil the story. Here is a summary of the whole plot.
Noah, is awoken to the sound of AC DC's Highway to Hell. This introduction is well written, and a good thing too, as it is repeated serial times throughout the chapter. The first chapter reminds me of the Tom Cruise movie Edge of Tomorrow. The character wakes up and ends up blacking out and then repeating the day. Noah is a generally dislikable character and he starts his day (most mornings) by demanding his wife make his breakfast and then complaining about the food. In one loop, he is nicer to his wife much to her surprise. I thought this was a pleasant treat to the reader. After serial loops, we start chapter two.
In chapter two, the story moves to something like the matrix. An alien race, the Rathics, is keeping humans as a resource, keeping them looped in their own reality in order to harvest their poop. They modified the humans so they poop an energy drink (gross). Apparently this drink is very addictive to them.
The last chapter reveals that another race of aliens taught the Rathics how to make the energy drink from the humans and in turn made the Rathics more tasty to eat.
The pacing and length of the book generally align with this review, the first chapter being quite a bit longer than the second; the third chapter consists of 4 paragraphs.
The universe the author created has a sense of cosmic justice to it. Those who are self-serving will face judgment for their actions, whether it is a repeating virtual death or an actual death.
The story is a quick read and by drawing in some well-known material, it quickly conveys the desired message.
