The Niece
I have literally just finished the book The Niece and I am simply in shock. It was very good. It is one of those books you really can't say much about without ruining something.
So I will keep this high level, because yes, you do need to read this book. I think I finished it in just a few sittings. So for me, that is not many, as I only read an hour or so a night.
I could not keep myself from turning the pages. Like many a good thriller, it does leave you in suspense at the end of the chapter. You have to read the next, and the next.
The story, the plot, all the points connecting is masterfully done. The characters, particularly the main character and her daughter, are well done, fleshed out and compelling. Even the more minor characters are well done. This review really isn't that helpful. You just need to read this book. Now it doesn't deal with murder. So it's not for everyone.
The book does follow quite a few tropes of the thriller genre. The first chapter is about something bad happening from a different character's perspective.
Spoiler alert
Ok, maybe the ending was a little over the top. The character does some things, maneuvers in a way that isn't entirely plausible. I think I still enjoyed it overall, but the way they were able to, I’m not sure, wrestle the gun away and save the day? A little over the top, a little jumping the shark.
Ok and one other spoiler detail
But I'm not really sure why an infant put up for adoption would ever end up in foster care? I'm pretty sure most infants are placed with a family and that is that.
Perspective: first person
Tense: present
One point of view character. (Except the first chapter I think, which is also a bit of a cliche for the genre)
Length: 282 pages
