Sins of Gokulpur

The Sins of Gokulpur is a gripping horror story. The story follows Dr. Rao, who is sent to Gokulpur (under false pretenses) to cure a disease. Quickly, the doctor is told that there is no sickness, but rather a curse.

As a man of science, the doctor rejects this idea, but becomes more disturbed as he is unable to figure out why the townsfolk are sick. This is paired with other events that the doctor has no rational basis for explaining: dark figures loom in the shadows and disappear when confronted; strange noises and knocks are heard on the doctor's door, but when opened, nothing is there.

The story itself is quite short and a page-turner. The story does change partway through from a horror story to an adventure of sorts, where the protagonists come up with a plan to defeat the evil haunting the town.

The writing is excellent and sets the tone of the work. “Someone was sitting on it. A dark figure. Thin, elongated. Its limbs too long, head cocked at an unnatural angle. It didn’t move. The beam flickered—just for a moment—but it was enough. The figure vanished.”

These sentences don’t follow conventional grammar, but to me work in a way that shows a tense and high-speed pacing.

The work reminds me of the work of H.P. Lovecraft, which mixed horror with elements of the supernatural, described in excellent detail. For fans of horror, I would certainly recommend this book.
