Host
Host is a short 35-page story about a man suffering from parasites or delusions of parasites. The story is quite dark and graphic at times, and there is also a good bit of profanity. The story uses the first-person past tense and reads like the narrator telling us what has happened to them, like a recounting of things that have happened in the recent past. The narrator tells us of messages being sent to them in the form of dead bodies.
The story starts with the narrator being the victim of a home invasion of sorts, but as they were drugged, they don’t exactly remember what happened. The story progresses with a series of improbable events, an attempt to frame the narrator, and a parasitic worm in his brain.
The story progresses with the narrator's battle with the parasites in his body, often without the help of traditional medicine, as the doctors don’t believe his story. He takes dewormers for dogs and seems to have nearly killed himself by damaging his liver.
The narrator continues the story until they arrive at the present.
The pacing of the story is rather quick. The amount of material and events covered is quite extensive, and all told from the perspective of the narrator. The book in some ways reminds me of The Blair Witch Project, with a creepy, but also sometimes campy vibe to it.
If you like creepy short stories, this may be for you.
