The Legend of Uh

The Legend of Uh is a coming-of-age novel featuring DJ, Dashing Junior, the son of Sir Dashing, a Beloved knight and hero. The story starts with DJ being knighted in commemoration of his father since he couldn't be knighted again.

DJ seeks to prove he has earned the title by going on a quest. DJ establishes his party and sets out, fighting foes, experiencing hardship, making friends, and bonding with his party. During the journey, he also finds a new appreciation for his father, who he seems to resent at the start of the novel.

The story is in neo-modern fantasy, where all races live in cities together. Humans, orcs, dwarves, and succubi all living in the same society (in contrast with some like Lord of the Rings, where Orcs and Humans interact only in war with one another). The races have some foundation in more traditional fantasy tropes, but also behave contrary to those trends. An example is Francis, an orc, who also owns a bookstore and is a bona-fide scholar.

The book is also a parody in many ways; the character Doctor Snipe is clearly based on Professor Snape, albeit an overdramatized and hilarious version of Snape. Another character, Mister Brambleton, struggles with writing books that are too long, a nod to Brandon Sanderson. Even the locations are references, like Skyhole is clearly a reference to Skyrim (complete with a dragonborn!).

The book lightly breaks the fourth wall at times. After a series of setbacks, one character comments on how they keep becoming broke, then find a job and get money only to lose the money and repeat the process. Another character then comments that it sounds like lazy writing.

The book's comedy is golden, and its emphasis on familial bonds and friendship will warm your heart. The book is quite approachable and is a quick read.
