Dragon in the Clouds
This book is in the fantasy genre using the archetypical story of King Arthur. A Royal Air Force pilot has just returned home from World War II and his gift to his daughter is a plush dragon.
He recounts a tale about a dragon which sounds like it is from another universe; though it may be that he is entirely making it up as he is just using his imagination. Merlin and King Arthur have slightly different spellings, instead being Merlinus and King Arturus.
Here is a summary of what transpires in the first third of the book, to avoid potential spoilers.
The dragons in this world can breathe fire but lack wings; they are being hunted down by King Arturus and his knights. One of the knights has a wife named Jaysha and a son named David. Merlinus casts a spell that causes the herbivore dragons to be able to levitate and fly. David is friends with one of these dragons named Rago (who is the toy given in our world).
Unfortunately, Merlinus has a pupil who has bad motives; he wants to overthrow his master. So he goes and uses the spell on some carnivorous dragons in exchange for prominence as they will survive the hunt and hopefully help him rise to power. Of course this does not work out for him well, though he tentatively has their support. Obviously, this sets up a later battle between the two dragon factions. I was impressed with the book initially for its originality and flipped through the pages in 3 sittings (about 45 minutes each). Though I will add that towards the end it does seem to be more cliche with how things transpire. The author does a good job of not leaving it on a cliffhanger while hinting at a sequel.
I think this book is worth reading. Although, one thing that does bother me is that the cover does not match how the dragons are described, not a deal breaker but it does seem a bit incongruous overall with visualizing those characters.
